The Mustangs football team running out of the tunnel against Troy.

TURF TALK.

Play-by-play by Tyrel Wagner of Valley Heights Football versus the Troy Trojans.

The Valley Heights Mustangs travel to Troy to take on the number 11 ranked Trojans. Both teams entered the week at 1-1 hoping to improve to 2-1. The Troy Trojans were celebrating their homecoming, and Valley Heights had a sour taste left in their mouth. Last year, The Mustangs hosted Troy for their homecoming game and were smacked around 55-6. The Mustangs looked to flip the script and defeat the Trojans on their homecoming.

After losing the coin toss, the Mustangs looked to set the tone early; but not on the first drive. After an offsides penalty on Tyrel Wagner, the Trojans hit a receiver on a bubble screen and took it 77 yards to the house. After that early score, the Mustangs looked to answer back. After a long sustained drive, Jayden DeWalt scored from 14 yards out. After their quick answer, the Mustangs took control by forcing the Trojan offense to punt. After another drive, Carson Spoonts found the endzone on an 18 yard scamper after a fumbled handoff. The Mustangs defense continued to stay strong with a defensive drive highlighted by a QB sack by Ben Arganbright. After the Trojans were forced to punt, the Mustangs made a few mistakes on the following drive. Tyrel Wagner drew back-to-back holding penalties, giving the Mustangs a first down and 30 yards to go. The Mustangs ended up punting and giving the Trojans another opportunity. But, they couldn’t get past the Mustang defense. After forcing another punt, the Mustangs scored once again on a 37 yard reverse to Logan Gray. Skipping to the second quarter, the defense was fierce and would not let the Trojans score. Kaison Bigham had two scoring runs in the second quarter.

After the second half kickoff, the Mustangs would not let up. Jayden DeWalt scored on a 58 yard scamper to the endzone to make the score a whopping 46-8. Then, the Trojans came back to life with a 76 yard kick return touchdown to make the score 46-16. The Mustangs looked to answer right back, and they delivered. Carson Spoonts took it himself for an 84 yard touchdown that would end up being the last TD of the contest. The Mustangs won convincingly with a score of 52-16.

The Mustangs will take on the Republic County Buffaloes on September 22nd, 2023
