Students eating at 5th quarter

5TH QUARTER. After every home Valley Heights football game, the high schoolers are invited to attend 5th Quarter at the Methodist Church in Blue Rapids where they are served a meal with games and prizes. Both the Blue Rapids and Waterville Methodist churches are involved in putting on the event.

“I always look forward to the food they serve because I am very hungry after playing a game,” said senior Mack Shanks.

All of the high schoolers enjoy going to eat, play games and win prizes. They also appreciate the preparation that goes into it. When asking Melanie Nemechek, co-chair of the committee, what they do to prepare for each evening after the game she said, “When the school calendars come out, we see the football schedule and start to plan everything out. Then two weeks prior to each 5th Quarter we make a list of what food we need to get, and have never run out!”

When asking Nemechek what their reasoning was for starting 5th quarter she said, “We like hosting an event that is warm, safe, and provides food for all the Valley Heights Students after football games.”
