Greetings Valley Heights Families!
As many of you may have heard, Laura Kelly, the Governor of Kansas announced yesterday an executive decision to postpone the first day of school until after the Labor Day holiday. Although this does delay our actual return date, we are still planning on getting our enrollment and preparatory work started. Under the current conditions, this planning and preparation for back-to-school looks very different than it has in years past. As our country, state, county and communities continue to navigate the complexities of the COVID19 pandemic, USD 498 is in the process of developing an educational plan that addresses the health and safety of our students, staff and families.
Although reopening our schools this fall is not without risk, we also know that prolonged school closure, the loss of access to social/emotional support and connection, and inconsistency of supportive services are significant losses for our students. Therefore, we are excited to share that we will allow options for student learning as the school year begins.
The Fall 2020 Learning Options are as follows:
Option One: On-Site Learning
Safety guidelines that address the health and well being of our students, staff and families will be strictly adhered to and protocols will be in place for day-to-day operations including:
Transportation
Medical/Health
Classrooms
Common Spaces
Transitions
Extra and Co-Curricular Activities
Facilities
Food Service
All district leadership, certified and non-certified staff are working diligently to craft a plan that addresses each of the above components. Included in this planning conversation are the Marshall County Health Department and Marshall County Emergency Management, with adherence to the recommendations put forth by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, as well as the Kansas State Department of Education. This comprehensive plan, once completed and reviewed, will be shared with all parents, students and stakeholders.
Option Two: Remote Learning
Virtual learning that will be structured under the following mandates:
Students and parents will complete a daily log of engagement and activities completed that must be submitted to the school district.
Students will be assessed on the same standards and competencies as onsite students.
Students must have a daily and/or per class period connection with teachers. Each day/class period that a student does not participate online, they will be marked absent. State and local truancy guidelines will be adhered to.
A Remote Learning commitment is a minimum of one academic quarter. Options for remote learning will be reevaluated each quarter.
We ask that you consider your options carefully as you make the best decision for the educational and social emotional needs of your child(ren) and family. The deadline for the Fall 2020 Learning Option decision is Monday, August 3rd. Please submit one response per family. You may utilize any of the following options for submission:

Enrollment
For the safety and convenience of our parent community, we are offering an online enrollment process this year. Enrollment will officially open on Monday, August 3rd and close on Friday, August 14th. A link will be sent via email and shared on our district website the morning of August 3rd. Should you prefer to enroll in person, our building secretaries will be available in their respective offices on those days to accommodate you.
Should you choose online enrollment, invoices for fee payment will be sent out by your building secretary or you can pay online.
Students new to the district will need to enroll in person at the appropriate attendance center, or at the District Office at 121 E. Commercial in Waterville.
As always, we are here to answer your questions and hear your concerns.
Sincerely,
Melissa Kennedy
Superintendent
